Arizona's been at the forefront of some news, and it's not your usual political fare—this time it's about the kids. With an eye on digital protection, a recently minted Arizonian law by the name of HB2195, designed to keep children shielded from ads that no one would call child-friendly, has received the gubernatorial seal of approval, according to an official press release from the Arizona Legislature. The law, sponsored by House Majority Whip Julie Willoughby, seeks to restrict digital apps from showing mature ads to young children.
Representative Willoughby, balancing the duality of being a lawmaker and a parent, put it this way: "As a mom and a legislator, I know how easily harmful content slips into apps that claim to be kid-friendly,” and then she added, “Parents should be able to trust that their children won’t be bombarded with adult-themed ads," a statement noted by the same press release. Meanwhile, the bipartisan backing this bill garnered in both chambers reflects a rare political harmony, taking aim at the sort of ads that have no business in a kid's casual game of digital hopscotch: think violence, drugs, explicit language, and a platter of sexual content.
Details are as such: any app that's tailored for children 11 or younger now has a to-do list that includes keeping their digital playground free of the adult stuff or writing some hefty checks for up to $100 grand per ad. With enforcement lying in the hands of the Arizona Attorney General, these apps have until the law swings into full action on January 1, 2026, so let's hope they’re not procrastinators. In a move to promote what they call public safety and parental rights, the Arizona House's Republican Majority Plan claims another notch on its legislative belt.
As for Representative Willoughby, she’s no benchwarmer in Arizona’s Legislative District 13. Areas like Chandler, Gilbert, and Sun Lakes know her name; after all, she’s not just sponsoring laws — she also serves as the House Majority Whip.
