Travelers hitting the Arizona highways this Memorial Day weekend are in for a pleasant surprise, at least when it comes to pit stops. The Sunset Point Rest Area is racking up accolades and has been recognized as one of the nation's best public restrooms, according to a recent survey by American River Wellness. While Sunset Point nabbed the third spot, many are questioning why it wasn't awarded first place, given its impressive array of amenities and scenic vistas.
In a statement made by the Arizona Department of Transportation, they touted the rest area's "majestic sunsets over the Bradshaw Mountains" and "impressive view across the valley." This place isn't just any roadside stop; it's a destination with a well-earned reputation following an extensive renovation completed in 2023. The updates included not only the restrooms, but also the vending machine building, ramadas, and parking lot, all while enhancing accessibility.
One might not expect the feats of engineering that keep such a remote location running 55 miles north of downtown Phoenix. It boasts a 1,800-foot-deep well and an on-site wastewater treatment, ensuring the facilities remain operational and pristine—a testament to the commitment of ADOT. As if to stamp their dedication in stone, there stands a sundial monument at Sunset Point, honoring state highway workers who have died in the line of duty, adding a touch of solemnity to the travel stop.
With the holiday rush coming up, travelers can rest assured that although the Hassayama Rest Area along US 60 near Wickenburg is currently closed for renovations, Sunset Point and the other ADOT facilities are ready to serve. For those planning their stops, a complete list of rest areas and amenities can be found at azdot.gov/restareas.
