The morning calm in Woodland Hills was disrupted on Memorial Day as a woman in a white van, believed to be armed and accompanied by a dog, led the Los Angeles Police Department on a pursuit that ended in a dramatic standoff and an officer-involved shooting. The chase initiated around 7:45 a.m. in Van Nuys when LAPD officers, responding to reports of a driver with a gun, attempted to approach the van. However, the driver, defying police commands, led them to a cul-de-sac at Marmora Drive and Arcana Road, where the situation escalated.
Several news outlets covered the unfolding events, offering varied perspectives on the incident. According to KTLA, at one point, the suspect was seen standing and then kneeling on top of the vehicle before lying down. The woman refused to exit her van promptly, which had a cardboard blocking the passenger side window, contributing to the tension of the moment. Meanwhile, NBC Los Angeles noted that the armed suspect sat atop the white van during some of the standoff, which culminated in an officer firing a weapon.
ABC7 provided aerial footage via AIR7 that captured the suspect jumping on the roof of the van, grimly holding a gun to her head, before retreating to the porch of a nearby home, which is where officers reportedly opened fire. Details on whether the woman was hit by the gunfire were not immediately available. During the standoff, residents were hastily evacuated by the police as the area became a locus of danger.
Adding to the narrative, CBS Los Angeles mentioned that the pursuit largely took place along Ventura Boulevard, with the suspect at one point driving the van over a sidewalk to circumvent a spike strip. After coming to a stop in the residential area, the standoff ensued, spotlighting a tense interaction between law enforcement and the individual barricaded in the van.
The situation concluded without any transports being required, as confirmed by the Los Angeles Fire Department to KTLA just before 10:00 a.m.
