Yesterday, the Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT) joined forces with Humphries Elementary School to present a unique Play Street event, aimed at promoting outdoor activities and alternative transportation for students. Between the hours of 2:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., the street in front of the school, located at 3029 Humphries Drive SE in Atlanta, was transformed into a car-free zone to the delight of children, parents, and school faculty alike. The event was part of a broader initiative by ATLDOT to foster a safer and more connected community through its Safe Routes to School Program.
As kids enjoyed an afternoon free from the buzz of traffic, they participated in a series of interactive activities designed to underscore the benefits of walking, biking, and rolling to school. According to a statement on ATLDOT's official event page, Play Street events are not just about reducing car congestion near school campuses but also about increasing active travel, especially during National Bike & Roll to School month, encouraging a pivot toward more sustainable and healthy modes of transportation for students and families despite that the weather, which is often unpredictable this time of year, held steady to allow for a full afternoon of festivities.
The occasion also served as a platform for Atlanta City Council member Antonio Lewis, representing Council District 12, to engage with the community and witness the positive impact of such initiatives firsthand. The ATLDOT and Humphries Elementary envisioned the event as a means to highlight the urgent need for improved walking and biking conditions, particularly during the rush of school drop-off and pick-up times when the potential for traffic-related accidents is at its peak.
