Atlantic Beach just got a major upgrade to its beach safety measures with the recent unveiling of a revamped lifeguard station, a project backed by the City of Jacksonville, aimed at keeping both residents and visitors safer along the coastline. With a design that maintains the spirit of its original William Morgan architecture, the new facility brings modern features thanks to the work of Cronk Duch Architecture and Planning. Addressing the much-needed refresh, the old structure has been replaced, providing lifeguards with better resources to do their job effectively, according to an announcement by the City of Atlantic Beach.

During a ribbon-cutting event on Tuesday, Mayor Curtis Ford highlighted the significance of this new chapter, "Today we gather not just to cut a ribbon but to open a new chapter, and how we protect and serve those who enjoy this beautiful coastline of ours," he proclaimed, signaling a commitment to enhanced public safety. The station, offering improved views for spotting swimmers in distress, now features dedicated areas for medical supplies, equipment, and initial treatment, ample storage space, and better comfort and accessibility for lifeguards, in part due to new restrooms, and shower facilities, as per the City of Atlantic Beach.

The new structure also respects the site’s historic significance, seamlessly integrating the modern revamp with nods to its architectural past. ACON Construction Co. brought the vision to life, closely overseen by Police Chief Vic Gualillo and City Engineer Steve Swann. Capt. John Phillips, a longtime lifeguard, emphasized its importance to the community: "It’s designed for efficiency, and built to support the people who put their lives on the line every day to keep beachgoers safe," he told the City of Atlantic Beach. "More than that, it’s a place of potential. It’s a place where future lifeguards will be trained, where local youth might get their first introduction into public service, and where teamwork and dedication will continue to thrive."

Apart from the safety benefits, there are improved public beach access points, with the addition of two accessible parking spaces and an accessible shower to welcome even more visitors. Phillips adds, "It’s an investment in both infrastructure and in people." By providing a well-equipped station, the city not only underscores its commitment to safeguarding beach-going experiences, but it also fosters a training ground for future public service heroes. The City of Atlantic Beach encourages everyone enjoying the beach to stay near lifeguard-protected areas, pay attention to safety flags, and follow instructions for a safe and enjoyable visit.
