The Austin Police Department's SWAT team was deployed to handle a situation in North Austin on Sunday night, after it was reported that an individual had barricaded themselves in an apartment complex following a robbery. The address given was the 9100 block of North Plaza, situated close to Rundberg Lane and Interstate 35.
Officers reached the scene and located both a suspect and a victim, KVUE reports. The suspect fled, then entered a home, the ownership of which was not verified, and might have been armed, APD Officer Zarling mentioned in a media briefing on Monday morning. In an update, APD confirmed they did not find the suspect upon entering the complex, and the area has been cleared, assuring the public that there is no present threat.
The incident, which initially began as a response to a robbery around 10:45 p.m. Sunday, led to the evacuation of nearby residents as a precautionary measure while authorities dealt with the barricaded person. Despite the tension-filled premise, the situation was later peacefully resolved, with APD negotiators, EMS, and Austin Fire actively present during the operations.
The identity of the suspect involved remains unknown, CBS Austin reports. The Austin Police Department has not elaborated on the suspect's motives or current whereabouts since the apartment search yielded no findings. Police maintain that there is no ongoing threat to the community at large after the incident was resolved.
