Baltimore Police have identified the 6-year-old boy found dead from a gunshot wound on Saturday afternoon as Micah Comegys. The tragic incident occurred inside a home on the 800 block of Vine Street in West Baltimore. According to WBAL-TV, police said officers discovered the gun thought to have been fired from inside the residence and found Micah's body, but noted that no one else was home when they arrived.
Neighbors have created a makeshift memorial on Vine Street, marked by toys, flowers, and balloons, as well as signs of grief and confusion. A neighbor expressed their deep sorrow, questioning how the young boy gained access to the firearm. Similarly, Baltimore City Public Schools confirmed that Micah was a Mary E. Rodman Elementary School student, where a crisis response team has since been made available to offer counseling. In an emotional interview detailed by WBAL-TV, a neighbor lamented, "Just put your guns up. Put them up where kids can't reach them."
Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley addressed the media Saturday, indicating that these incidents happen too frequently and promised action, saying, "whoever owns the gun if it wasn't properly stored, they will be prosecuted to the best of our ability," as reported by WMAR-2 News. The investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. According to a statement provided by FOX45 News, medics were dispatched first to the scene following a 911 call, though details of the caller and whether anyone has been questioned or charged have not been released.
