Last night, an officer-involved shooting in Essex broke the evening's calm as Baltimore County Police were called to a scene involving a reportedly suicidal individual. According to the official report from the Baltimore County Police Department, dispatched officers encountered the subject on the 1000 block of Pine Road, armed with a knife.
Despite officers ordering the individual to drop the weapon, the situation escalated when he refused to comply. In an attempt to safely resolve the incident, one officer made the split-second decision to discharge his firearm, subsequently striking the subject. The Baltimore County Police noted that the armed subject was later transported to an area hospital for treatment following the shooting.
Currently, homicide detectives from the Baltimore County Police Department are leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The department's procedures dictate that any officer who discharges their firearm while on duty is to be placed on administrative leave, pending an investigation.
