In a move set to streamline operations and enhance local governance, Governor Brian Kemp finalized the consolidation of Barrow County Airport's management under county control. On Wednesday, Kemp inked SB 331 into law, transferring all assets, liabilities and oversight duties previously held by the Barrow County Airport Authority directly to Barrow County Government. This shift marks a new chapter in the airport's history, which has seen its share of management changes since the establishment of a joint Airport Authority for the City of Winder and Barrow County on March 25, 1958.
Barrow County Chairman Pat Graham expressed his gratitude for the transition, stating, "I would like to offer my sincere thanks and gratitude to Gov. Kemp and the entire Barrow County legislative delegation. Their leadership on this important legislation cannot be understated." Signed just days ago, this legislative change seeks to fortify community ties to the airport and bolster its economic potential an irreplaceable county asset, according to officials. The move, which phases out the Barrow County Airport Authority erected in an amendment on March 28, 1986, promises a unified approach to the airfield's future.
With a future-focused mindset, Stoney Bangert, a seasoned pilot and experienced project manager, is taking command as the new Airport Manager. "Stoney's extensive experience – both in the air and on the ground – will be an invaluable asset as the Barrow County Airport is shaped for the future," County Manager Srikanth Yamala told Barrow County. Bangert boasts a remarkable career that spans 27 years in the US Navy, with a retirement rank of Naval Officer coupled with comprehensive aviation-related specialties. His academic credentials include a Bachelor's in Business Administration and a Master of Business Administration from the Naval Post Graduate School.
Prior to accepting the position at Barrow County Airport, Bangert honed his managerial skills at RAC Properties in Athens as Operations Manager. The combination of his military background and business acumen is viewed as a promising mix for fostering the growth and economic development of Barrow County's skies. In the county's effort to support and invest in the aviation hub, officials see Bangert's appointment as a strategic move to broaden economic horizons, as reported by Yamala.
