It's a classic coastal conundrum for the Bay Area as winds pick up and breezy conditions are forecasted to sweep through the mountain and desert regions. According to NWS San Diego, the gusts could hit anywhere from 30 to 40 mph, with some areas potentially seeing spikes up to 55 mph.
For those hanging closer to the coast, the temperatures are taking a mild dip, with coastal areas ranging between 66 and 71 degrees. A slight warm-up is anticipated for Monday, reaching 67 to 74 degrees. In the meantime, the inland valleys and desert regions are bracing for a hike in the heat, anticipating highs pressing towards 81 degrees today and the low desert creeping up to a sizzling 99 degrees.
Meanwhile, the marine layer refuses to take the hint that it might have overstayed its welcome. It's shallower than yesterday but still spreading its foggy fingers inland, reducing visibility in certain intersections of cloud and terrain. "Gusty westerly winds continue in the mtns and on adjacent desert slopes, with localized gusts of 35-50 mph in the favored mtn passes," reports National Weather Service San Diego, CA.
On the horizon, there's a tease of gradual warming through the week, but not before another low-pressure trough turns into a closed upper-level low over Southern California by Tuesday morning. This atmospheric tango could prompt inland temperatures to sashay into the mid-80s. And as we head into the weekend, conditions to stay attuned to: "A 60-80 percent chance of exceeding 95 degrees in the eastern portion of the IE and about a 30 percent chance in the western portion," per the National Weather Service.
Offshore, mariners are cautioned as gusts might reach 20 knots Monday afternoon and evening near San Clemente Island, but calmer seas are expected to return by Tuesday. The beaches, not outdone by the wind and the heat, are serving up their drama with a high rip current risk through Monday, thanks to a long-period south-southwest swell that will cause surf to ebb back down come Tuesday.
