A mid-afternoon shooting yesterday near Detroit's Lodge Freeway has left a 64-year-old man from Birmingham with injuries, authorities reported. The incident occurred at approximately 2:35 p.m. near the junction of the Lodge Freeway and Eight Mile Road, according to Michigan State Police. The CBS News stated that first responders located the victim suffering from a gunshot wound. His vehicle displayed evidence of the violence, riddled with bullet holes.
Despite his injuries, the man was alert and conscious at the scene and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The Detroit News reported that investigators are at the early stages of determining a motive and are pursuing a possible suspect and vehicle description. They suspect the shooting may have taken place near the intersection of the Lodge and Seven Mile Road.
The shooting had immediate repercussions on traffic, with southbound lanes of the Lodge being shut down, contributing to already heavy traffic due to it being the designated detour route for the closed Interstate 696. According to a social media statement by MSP's Second District, First Lt. Mike Shaw, "This investigation is in the beginning stages and we have a lot of unanswered questions." He indicated that the authorities were working to reopen the freeway, which was confirmed to have all lanes closed along with the entrance ramp at Eight Mile as late as 4:43 p.m., as per reports by the Michigan Department of Transportation, and detailed by The Detroit News.
MSP is urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward, offering tip lines at 855.MICH.TIP and Crime Stoppers 800-SPEAK-UP to facilitate community assistance in the search for answers in this violent disruption that rippled through Detroit's afternoon commute.
