Bowling Green State University has taken a groundbreaking step by becoming the first institution in the nation to offer a Bachelor of Science in AI + X, which marries artificial intelligence with a secondary discipline. This innovative approach allows students to tailor their education to the rapidly changing workforce, with specialties in fields like computer science, mathematics, physics, history, journalism, or public relations.
The degree is designed to churn out graduates equipped for careers shaping the future, infusing AI knowledge into specific domains. Dr. JK “Jake” Lee, professor and chair of the BGSU Department of Computer Science, emphasized the importance of this integration, telling ABC6 On Your Side, "The AI + X degree reflects our commitment to preparing students for the future of work, where the ability to integrate AI with domain-specific knowledge is essential."
Announced shortly after Meta poured $800 million into the creation of the Bowling Green Data Center, the new AI + X program will begin in Fall 2025, pending approval from the Ohio Department of Higher Education. BGSU President Rodney K. Rogers expressed the university's commitment to align with modern educational needs and workforce demands, as reported by Cleveland19.
The curriculum will cover Python programming, AI ethics, machine learning, and visualization, ensuring students are technically adept and versed in AI's ethical and societal impacts. With plans to adapt the curriculum as workforce needs evolve, the BGSU College of Arts and Sciences sees the potential for graduates in roles such as AI developers, data scientists, and machine learning engineers. Ellen Schendel, dean for the BGSU College of Arts and Sciences, explained the decision to invest in an AI-focused program, saying in a release from the university obtained by Sandusky Register, "AI affects all sectors and industries, so it's important for students with expertise in AI to also have a contextual field in which to apply and problem solve with the technology."
This initiative is expected to put BGSU at the forefront of AI education, meeting the exponentially growing demand for jobs. A 2024 PwC AI Jobs Barometer report highlighted an upsurge in AI-related job postings, outpacing general job postings by three and a half times and showcasing productivity growth five times greater in AI-integrated sectors, as mentioned in ABC6 On Your Side's reporting.
