A Brooklyn man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison following a daylight shooting in Sunset Park back in 2022, that left a young man with severe injuries. According to the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office, the 56-year-old John Carter of Park Slope carried out an assault that would irreparably harm the physical and economic well-being of his 20-year-old victim.
Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Adam Perlmutter delivered the sentence following Carter’s conviction on charges including second-degree attempted murder, first- and second-degree assault, and criminal use and possession of a firearm. The sentencing followed what District Attorney Eric Gonzalez characterized as a serious and unacceptable act.
On September 4, 2022, Carter, along with three accomplices, stumbled upon their victim, who was distracted by YouTube videos in his vehicle. After an initial confrontation and physical assault, the incident escalated when the victim was shot twice in the chest as he attempted to recover his stolen phone. The incident resulted in the victim's hospitalization for a week, and the removal of his gallbladder along with other significant organ damage.
The other men involved in the incident received varied sentences based on their role in the crime and plea deals struck with prosecutors. Lamount Barrott, age 37, pled guilty to third-degree robbery and second-degree attempted assault, receiving a sentence of 3.5 to seven years. Similarly, Walter Lindsay, 49, and William Parez, 42, pleaded guilty, receiving significantly shorter sentences for their involvement. The District Attorney also extended gratitude to support staff, including Supervising Paralegal Andy Mata, and Paralegal Elizabeth Torres for their roles in bringing the case to a close.
With sentencing concluded, the case reflects the Brooklyn District Attorney’s stated focus on addressing gun violence and pursuing legal outcomes for victims. The prosecution was led by Assistant District Attorney Michael Boykin of the Green Zone Trial Bureau and Assistant District Attorney Gabrielle Tielman-Fenelus, under the supervision of Bureau Chief Frank DeGaetano.
