Brooklyn's Cypress Hills neighborhood is undergoing a major transformation with the completion of Logan Fountain, a new affordable housing development. This project, a collaboration between New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul, will provide over 340 housing units for New Yorkers in need. The site, formerly a vacant gas station, now houses transitional accommodations for homeless families and permanent affordable apartments, contributing to efforts to address the city's persistent shortage of affordable housing.
The project boasts 343 units with 173 earmarked as permanent affordable housing and 169 as transitional housing, complemented by one unit for an on-site superintendent; Mayor Adams emphasized the importance of creating affordable housing options, "Our whole-of-government approach is allowing us to partner with Governor Hochul and the state today to deliver over 340 units of affordable and transitional housing," he said, meanwhile Governor Hochul stressed that "the only way to address the housing crisis is to build more housing," highlighting the resolve to provide New Yorkers with safe, affordable homes according to an official announcement.
Logan Fountain received significant funding from various agencies including the New York City 15/15 Supportive Housing Program, with a $46 million investment to support 5,850 units of supportive housing as declared in Mayor Adams' touted "Best Budget Ever," as per reports by the Mayor's office. The development is part of the expansive $24.7 billion affordable housing capital plan and $339 million allocated to revitalize the city's 15/15 initiative. In addition, the project developer is Hudson Companies, with HELP USA managing transitional housing operations and Jericho Project responsible for on-site support services.
Designed to cater to families of varying sizes, Logan Fountain includes a variety of apartments ranging from studio to three-bedroom units; of these, 105 supportive housing units are reserved for families in need of assistance including mental health support and career counseling which will be provided by on-site services, HELP USA is operating the transitional housing that offers additional critical services to residents, facilitating their path to long-term stability these units are supported by funding and tax credits from multiple sources including HPD's Supportive Housing Loan Program, New York City Council, and the New York state Energy Research and Development Authority as well as being part of the New York state Department of Environmental Conservation's Brownfield Cleanup Program.
Initiatives like Logan Fountain are pivotal in reimagining the physical infrastructure of the city's transitional housing system, according to Joslyn Carter, Administrator of New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS). New York State Homes and Community Renewal Commissioner RuthAnne Visnauskas has lauded the investment in Logan Fountain and its potential to benefit the Cypress Hills community for generations. As developer Hudson Companies' president David Kramer puts it, the Logan Fountain project exemplifies a collaborative effort between government agencies and private organizations to address housing challenges.
