A silver truck, a concealed camera, and a desert dumping ground—these elements converged in a case of illegal dumping investigated by Buckeye police, with cooperation from the City of Buckeye Public Works. On May 14, Public Works staff discovered debris left in a desert area near Sunrise and Miller, prompting an investigation grounded in efforts to address recurrent illegal dumping problems in the locale, leading to the deployment of a clandestine camera which captured revealing images of a suspect vehicle on May 8.
The Buckeye Police Real Time Information Center became a pivotal resource as it facilitated the identification of the truck's registered owner—a man in his 60s residing in Buckeye. The images caught by the camera set up by city workers were instrumental in tracking down the suspect, who was confronted by detectives at his home and later received a citation for criminal littering.
Under Arizona law, misdemeanor criminal littering can result in a fine of up to $750 and potential jail time of up to four months. These punitive measures starkly contrast with the nominal fee of less than $15 to dump waste at the Southwest Regional Landfill. According to the City of Buckeye’s news release yesterday, community officials strongly emphasized the importance of respecting and protecting public spaces and wildlife.
