Two standout students from Canutillo ISD have earned accolades from Big Brothers Big Sisters of El Paso for their dedication to mentorship. At a ceremony in downtown El Paso, Canutillo High School senior Ian Garcia and his mentee, Luis Puerta from Damian Elementary School, were named Big Brother and Little Brother of the Year, respectively. According to Canutillo ISD, this recognition is a nod to their substantial synergy and the considerable influence they've had on each other.

Participating in the Early Learning Pathway for future educators, Ian Garcia has been a guiding hand to his Little, Luis Puerta, over the past year. The program, a partnership between Big Brothers Big Sisters and Canutillo ISD, creates mentorship opportunities for high-school students with younger pupils. Crystal Rodriguez, a Career & Technical Education teacher at Canutillo High School, shared that "This is the second year that Big Brothers Big Sisters has recognized students from Canutillo’s Early Learning Pathway, and it speaks volumes about our students’ and teachers’ dedication to making a difference," as per Canutillo ISD.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of El Paso has long been championing one-to-one mentoring relationships, aiming to empower the youth to realize their potential fully. Under the auspices of Canutillo ISD, high schoolers enrolled in the teacher preparation track have the chance to impart weekly wisdom to their elementary counterparts, fostering deep connections and mutual personal development.
