
Last week, the Canutillo Independent School District celebrated the linguistic acumen of its students with the district’s annual Spanish Spelling Bee, according to details shared on the district's official website. The competition was fierce as students from various schools put their spelling skills to the test, vying for the top spots and the chance to progress to the regional level. The event brought together participants from across Canutillo ISD, all demonstrating their excellence in spelling in the Spanish language.
In an impressive showcase of young talent, Destiny Hernandez from Canutillo Elementary School managed to secure the first-place victory in the kindergarten through first-grade category. An event release listed Sofia Ang from Reyes Elementary and Angel Ibarra, also hailing from Canutillo Elementary, were hot on her heels, securing second and third place, respectively. These early learners stood apart, highlighting their ability to already handle the intricacies of Spanish orthography.
The competition heated up in the second through third grade division, where Caleb Guardado of Bill Childress Elementary claimed his first-place win. Montserrat Delgado, representing Davenport Elementary, and Naphtali Hernandez of Damian Elementary followed closely, taking second and third place in turn. The district's praise for these young scholars echoed a sentiment of pride and the promise of a bright linguistic future.
As the rounds progressed, Sophia Valdez from Reyes Elementary School emerged as the winner of the fourth through fifth grade division and is set to advance to the regional competition. Constanza Garcia and Carlos Bustamante, both her peers at the district, cinched second and third place, respectively. In the middle school bracket, the sixth through eighth grade category saw a clean sweep with Alderete Middle School taking all three top spots. According to Canutillo ISD, Montserrat Vargas claimed first place, Mario Jacobo grabbed second, and Luis Carlos Moran snagged third.
All participants were congratulated for their achievements, with district officials expressing their support and best wishes for those who are set to participate in the regional competitions. These students, representing the best of Canutillo ISD's language learners, not only displayed their mastery of spelling but also the rich, cultural layers embedded in the Spanish language that they have come to embrace and now skillfully navigate.
