Dr. Pedro Galaviz, the long-standing Superintendent of Canutillo Independent School District, is slated to retire at the year's end, as the district board confirmed on Tuesday. Having served nearly 13 years at the helm, Dr. Galaviz will assume the role of Superintendent Emeritus on August 1, where he will continue to advise and support the district until December 31. As reported by Canutillo ISD, the accomplished superintendent will leave behind a legacy of profound improvements and accolades.
During his tenure, according to the district's announcement, Canutillo ISD has not only received three successive A ratings from the Texas Education Agency but also watched its Northwest Early College High School snatch a National Blue Ribbon School title by the U.S. Department of Education. While transitioning into his new advisory role, Galaviz will oversee the preparations for a new district leader. "Serving as superintendent of this incredible district has been the honor of my life," Dr. Galaviz said, as per Canutillo ISD.
Galaviz's legacy includes the initiation of the district's first public Montessori program and two middle school programs that emphasize STEAM and public service. "None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the hard work and vision of our teachers, staff, principals, and the families who support us," Dr. Galaviz emphasized, as obtained by Canutillo ISD. Further showing support for his community, Dr. Galaviz championed the passing of the 2024 Bond, which promises to bolster the district's facilities to cater to future student growth. The Board's unanimous decision to authorize legal counsel alongside Board President Armando Rodriguez to finalize Galaviz's retirement terms underscores their confidence in his stewardship.
The Canutillo Independent School District Board is now embarking on a search for a new superintendent. Galaviz, who the Canutillo ISD's official post details, successfully navigated the district through periods of underfunding and political pressure, will assist in this critical process before his retirement goes into effect. The Board plans to bring forward suggestions for an interim superintendent at a meeting on May 27, inviting the community to take part in the selection. Amidst this transitional phase, a search firm will help in identifying a worthy successor to carry on the district's newfound glory.
