Mark your calendars for a vibrant community event celebrating diversity and pride. The Town of Carrboro, in collaboration with El Centro Hispano, is set to host the Carrboro Orgullo Pride Celebration. The event is slated for 5 to 8 p.m. on June 14, at Carrboro Town Commons, located at 301 W. Main St. Revelers can look forward to an evening filled with food trucks, dancing, drag shows, and music, with plenty of activities, including crafts, catered for the kids.
Ahead of the celebration, there's an opportunity to publicly display unity and pride during the Pride Piper Walk, which starts from El Centro Hispano, at 201 W. Weaver Street. In a statement obtained by the Town of Carrboro, community members are encouraged to join at 4:30 p.m. to march alongside local officials and to help roll the Rainbow Ram down Weaver Street to the Town Commons for the celebration. This pre-festival tradition not only kicks off the evening's festivities but also symbolizes the collective stride toward visibility and equality.
The Carrboro Orgullo Pride Celebration serves as more than just an evening of entertainment and fun. It is a dedicated space to celebrate and share the diverse cultures, identities, and experiences of the local Latinx LGBTQ community. According to the official announcement by the Town of Carrboro, "Organizers from El Centro Hispano are collaborating with the Town of Carrboro to bring an event that fosters unity, inclusivity, and empowerment by showcasing our community’s talents while providing social, healthcare, and advocacy resources, and family fun."
This event is one key part of the larger efforts under Chapel Hill-Carrboro Small Town Pride, which aims to promote equality for the LGBTQIA+ communities. It intends to not only increase visibility but also to challenge anti-LGBTQ legislation, and to bring awareness to a wide spectrum of pertinent LGBTQ issues. "Progress for true equality requires the support of everyone, including straight allies," according to the details shared by the Town of Carrboro, recognizing that when the rights of LGBTQ+ people are uplifted, it strengthens the entire community at large.
