The summer season is poised to bring a bevy of construction projects to the Colorado mountain routes, impacting travelers heading to the state's beloved outdoor destinations. According to CDOT, these projects, commencing in June in some areas, will introduce critical road upgrades across various mountain passes, aiming to ensure safer and smoother commutes for the droves of residents and tourists alike.

With Colorado's extended winter clasp releasing only eight months a year, CDOT takes advantage of the warmer months to execute essential improvements. The summer construction lineup includes significant work on the I-70 Mountain Corridor, where traffic holds for rock scaling and blasting are expected in June and July, especially between the I-70 Floyd Hill Project and the Vail Pass Auxiliary Lane Project. Motorists planning to traverse US 40 in Grand County, or CO 82 from Twin Lakes over Independence Pass, should anticipate weekday disruptions owing to resurfacing and safety projects, as reported by CDOT.

In the northeastern region of Colorado, road safety enhancements will affect US 34 and US 36 routes leading to Estes Park, while southwestern routes like US 160 in Pagosa Springs will undergo downtown reconstruction. Further projects are scheduled along US 550 for rockfall mitigation and at Coal Bank Pass for wall replacement. Meanwhile, the southeastern routes will not be immune to summer slowdowns with resurfacing works slated on US 24 and US 285 in Teller and Park counties, respectively.
