After the annual closure through the colder months, CDOT has officially reopened Independence Pass for vehicular traffic. Celebrations are likely minimal, but the practical impact is significant. Starting May 22 at 4 p.m., both sides of the pass were made accessible, ending the longer journey times forced upon motorists by necessary detours during the winter season, as reported by CDOT.
The tasks to safely open were no small feat. CDOT crews had to not only mitigate avalanche threats but also rapidly to repair damages sustained during the off season. Earlier in the month, on May 12, specialized teams dropped explosives from helicopters to trigger controlled snow slides, effectively reducing the natural hazard on CO Highway 82. This preventive measure was vital for the safety of those passing through, with crews then clearing the aftermath to pave the way for the thoroughfare.
Essential maintenance followed avalanche control with CDOT teams working tirelessly on guarding rail replacement, pothole patching, and ensuring ditches and culverts were clear for proper water drainage. "The annual opening of Independence Pass is an important step as we transition from winter weather to summer," said CDOT's Region 3 Regional Transportation Director Jason Smith, as per CDOT, expressing satisfaction that the road was repaired to accommodate safe travel.
On the day of the reopening, over 50 vehicles lined up, eager to traverse the mountain pass, indicating its significance as a thoroughfare. Workers ensured that the necessary safety measures were checked off, allowing the road to officially be deemed safe for travel. They indeed worked long shifts and pushed through difficult conditions to complete this task. CDOT remains steadfast in its message that certain restrictions remain; commercial and recreational vehicles over 35 feet in length are prohibited from the pass due to its configuration.
