The halls of Centennial High School buzz with an unmistakable vibrancy, much of which emanates from Room 107, where Leanne Rubadue, a mathematics teacher and mentor, has been inspiring students for 24 years. Known for her unwavering commitment and contagious enthusiasm, Rubadue is a fixture in her classroom and a prominent figure throughout the school, serving as the swim coach and a beacon of support for students facing academic and personal challenges.
With a career spent entirely at Centennial High, Rubadue has seen generations of students come through her doors, and her impact on them is well-documented, "A school can't function without a Rubadue on staff," Assistant Principal Adam Clausen told the school's website, praising her role as essential not only for the mathematics department but for the entire school spirit, without Rubadue, he added, "a lot of things would not work." Her classroom is described as where students are met with high standards and consistent motivation, their achievements celebrated, and their setbacks treated as growth opportunities.
Rubadue's influence on her students is reflected in their words and respect for her. Junior Will Mann expressed appreciation for Rubadue's mentoring, both in and out of the classroom, "Rubadue is always consistently supportive of everyone," he told the school's website. And for freshman Kade Pimento, Rubadue's presence has been a transformative force during difficult times; "I just want to say thank you to [Rubadue] because I've had some troubles," he said, acknowledging the extraordinary support he received from her.
Research underpins the effectiveness of Rubadue's methods, a 2022 study published in Frontiers indicates that positive engagement between teachers and students has significant benefits on academic motivation, emotional well-being, and long-term achievement, teacher-student relationships were also found to be "a strong predictor of academic success," especially in challenging learning environments which echoes the practices upheld by Rubadue at Centennial High School. School leaders lean heavily on Rubadue's expertise, recognizing her value in supporting students from all grade levels, whether they're on her roster or not, she helps guide them through the academic year, often culminating in timing their success right for graduation.
