A deadly explosion outside a fertility clinic in Palm Springs caused one death and multiple injuries. Authorities are treating the incident as an "intentional act of terrorism," according to ABC10. The FBI identified the suspect as 25-year-old Guy Edward Bartkus from Twentynine Palms, about an hour from the explosion site. Bartkus, who opposes bringing people into the world against their will and is known to express his views through writings or recordings, is linked to the investigation. The explosion, caused by a large vehicle-borne improvised explosive device, was felt over a mile away, as reported by CBS News.
An explosion in Palm Springs damaged several buildings over multiple blocks. The FBI called it one of the largest bombing investigations in Southern California. The American Reproductive Centers reported that their IVF lab and stored embryos were safe, but their office was badly damaged. A witness, Rhino Williams, said he heard the explosion, saw a dark gray smoke cloud, and described a building "blown out" into the street, with debris and a car’s burning front axle nearby, as stated by ABC10. He checked the clinic and nearby buildings for people before police arrived.
After the blast, law enforcement increased activity in the area, including evacuations in Twentynine Palms as a precaution due to a possible "blast zone," as mentioned by CBS News. The FBI said there is no ongoing threat to the public. Officials in Palm Springs said the event had a strong effect on the community. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi condemned the attack and mentioned the administration’s position on violence against fertility clinics. California Governor Gavin Newsom shared condolences and said the state will continue to support the investigation. The FBI will give more information at a press conference at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
