A series of text messages have publicly unveiled a deep-seated feud between former Charlotte City Councilman Tariq Bokhari and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings, culminating in a six-figure settlement paid by the city. As Queen City News reported, the contentious exchange included threats by Bokhari to "cripple his legacy" and calls for Jennings's dismissal over a disagreement about police vest policy. While Charlotte-Mecklenburg NAACP President Corine Mack criticized Bokhari's conduct as beyond his scope of duties, Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles has expressed regret for not supporting Jennings earlier.
Amidst the tension, Council member Tiawana Brown voiced her concerns about the impact on Charlotte's governance. "As a Council Member representing Charlotte’s District 3 and as someone with expertise in harm reduction and trauma-informed care, I watched the press conference with deep disappointment and disbelief," Brown told WCNC. She fears the recent events have eroded the trust essential for the City Council's function.
Meanwhile, Krista Bokhari, wife of Tariq Bokhari, has launched her own campaign against what she alleges to be unethical conduct by Charlotte officials, including the Mayor, City Manager, and Interim City Attorney. According to a statement released on Facebook and covered by the Charlotte Observer, Krista Bokhari accuses city leaders of withholding information crucial to the Council's decision-making, particularly about the payout to Jennings. Her post claims that other city leaders are complicit in the use of "unethical, immoral and potentially illegal tactics."
Krista Bokhari's actions have also triggered a response from the city’s legal office. Interim City Attorney Anthony Fox, however, has refrained from addressing these allegations. "We're not going to confirm or deny," he said, highlighting the need to respect the confidentiality that the law provides concerning closed sessions and personnel privacy matters. This statement was noted by Queen City News as part of their ongoing coverage of the drama between the former Councilman and Police Chief.
The aftermath of the acrimonious exchanges and ethical accusations has left the Charlotte community with many questions. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Fraternal Order of Police voiced their concern over the settlement's impact on taxpayers and is preparing a no confidence vote against Chief Jennings.
