The streets of Chicago bore witness once again to the annual St. Jude Memorial March on Sunday, honoring the memory of Chicago Police Department officers fallen in the line of duty. As noted by ABC 7 Chicago, the 93rd iteration of this solemn event saw Gold Star families and CPD comrades commemorate figures like Officer Enrique Martinez, who lost his life last year amidst his sworn duties.
The march, which started from Michigan Avenue, wound its way through the city's streets with thousands of participants paying tribute. A report by WGN-TV detailed how the march traversed its traditional route, starting at North Michigan Avenue and East Superior Street before concluding its tribute between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Photos of the 606 officers who paid the ultimate sacrifice adorned the route, turning Chicago Ave into an album of heroes and a narrative of sacrifice.
Corroborating both reports, the event also marked a moment for an interfaith service at Holy Name Cathedral, where community leaders, law enforcement, and citizens could reflect on loss and commitment to public safety. The Saint Jude Memorial March, accompanied by the dirge-like sounds of bagpipes and solemnized further by a 21-gun salute, was punctuated by remarks from CPD Supt. Larry Snelling is celebrating the bravery and service of those honored.
Completing a weekend of tributes, the march followed the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation's annual Run to Remember on Saturday, according to WGN-TV. The run, which saw over 5,000 participants, stands in solidarity with the Saint Jude Police League's efforts to support families of the bereaved, continuing the legacy of the oldest fraternal order associated to CPD in providing aid and remembrance.
As a final note, traffic alterations were executed to accommodate the march, with closures in effect on N. Michigan Ave from East Wacker Drive to E. Chicago Ave and along Chicago Ave from N. Michigan Ave to N. Clark St.
