Tragedy struck an assisted-living facility in South Shore earlier this week when a 47-year-old man suspected in the homicide of a fellow resident was fatally shot by Chicago police. According to ABC Chicago, the deceased resident, identified as Keith Harding, 58, was discovered with fatal stab wounds on the fifth floor of the Grand Regency of Jackson Park Supportive Living.
The sequence of events leading to the grisly discovery began when police responded to reports of a man threatening residents with a knife. Officers attempted to subdue him using Tasers, but the non-lethal intervention failed. As the man continued to advance toward them with the weapon, the situation escalated, and officers shot him. As per the Chicago Sun-Times, the man was found in his residence, apartment No. 520, on the same floor where Harding's body was later discovered.
The Cook County medical examiner's office confirmed that Harding sustained a fatal stab wound to the chest, ruling his death a homicide, and the knife-wielding man who was shot by police died of multiple gunshot wounds. Neighbors expressed their shock and concern, with one resident, Maxine Johnson, describing Harding as "energetic and fun" and recounting the chaos of the early morning incident, saying, "You'd be scared," she told the Chicago Sun-Times, "I didn't know something would happen like this." The investigation into Harding's death follows the line of a homicide.
