The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert following a series of armed robberies in the East Garfield Park and Humboldt Park neighborhoods. According to the alert, unknown assailants armed with handguns have been targeting individuals, forcibly taking their belongings. The recent string of incidents occurred on Wednesday, with two robberies happening on North Kedzie and one on West Cortez between the times of 6:18 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
As reported by the Chicago Police Department, the suspects were seen exiting a stolen gray Kia Optima, approaching victims while displaying black handguns to demand property. After committing the robberies, driving off, they were seen fleeing the area with the victim's possessions. In one instance, a victim was pistol-whipped, escalating the severity of the crimes.
The offenders have been described as 2-4 Black males, aged 18-20 years, between 5'7" and 6'3" in height, and weighing approximately 150-180 pounds, as detailed by the Chicago Police Department. All were reportedly wearing black or dark-colored clothing along with black ski masks. The community is on high alert, and residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
Residents are advised to prioritize safety and never resist a robbery, as stated in the alert, "Value your life over any and all property." The police recommend noting any distinguishable features of potential suspects, such as scars or limps, but caution against pursuing fleeing assailants. Instead, witnesses should focus on getting to safety and immediately dialing 9-1-1, making sure not to touch anything at the crime scene until police arrive, as stated by the Chicago Police Department.
