For Arizonans gearing up for road trips this Memorial Day weekend, the path is looking clear. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) announced that no state highway closures will hamper travelers' plans from Friday through Monday. "No full construction or maintenance closures are planned on state highways, including Phoenix-area freeways, from Friday afternoon, May 23, to late Monday night, May 26," according to an ADOT news release. Though not a single full closure is scheduled, travelers should anticipate higher volumes of traffic and potential slowdowns, especially during peak travel periods on Friday and Monday afternoons.

Moving through existing work zones, like the Interstate 17 Improvement Project between Anthem Way and Sunset Point, will require drivers to merge carefully and may require them to slow down, be alert for the unexpected, including disabling vehicle crashes or wildfires that could prompt unscheduled highway closures. Preparing for the unexpected, ADOT advises travelers to pack emergency kits with essentials such as extra drinking water, blankets, a first-aid kit, and charged cellphones, among other items. Going beyond the basics, they also recommend a hat, sunglasses, and an umbrella for shade or rainfall, signaling the commencement of the summer travel season.

When it comes to road safety, ADOT emphasizes physical preparedness and recommends checking the car's fluid levels and tire pressure before hitting the road, getting enough rest to avoid fatigue while driving, and ensuring a sober ride for those who plan to consume alcohol. "Never drive while impaired. Buckle up and obey speed limits," the ADOT release reminds. Brush fires are a serious hazard, too, so ADOT urges drivers, if towing, to secure trailer chains to prevent sparks and never to stop in areas where the brush could ignite from hot vehicle components.

For real-time conditions and updates, travelers can utilize ADOT's resources, such as the Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov or the corresponding AZ511 app. Updates are also regularly posted to ADOT's X feed, @ArizonaDOT.
