The City of Cleveland is gearing up to infuse local community development with a significant financial boost courtesy of federal funds. As per a public notice released on the City of Cleveland's website, a proposal to accept over $27 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is set to be brought before the Cleveland City Council. The funds are earmarked for a variety of critical programs intended to fortify the living conditions of Cleveland's residents.
The breakdown of the incoming funds, detailed here, allocates nearly $19.5 million for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. Following that, the Home Investment Partnerships (HOME) Program is receiving an injection of over $4.2 million. In comparison, the Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) Program and the Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) Program are set to receive approximately $1.8 million and $2.4 million, respectively. The funds, aimed at providing relief and improvement in the city, were outlined as part of the 2025-2026 Program Year Action Plan mandated by HUD.
The civic initiative is a response to identified priority needs and specific objectives outlined in the 2021-2026 Consolidated Plan. The Department of Community Development is leading the efforts to secure these federal funds. The upshot of these funds will be to improve the situation for various communities in Cleveland grappling with issues related to housing and stability, with a particular focus on the vulnerable and those in dire need.
