At Cleveland State University, the 2025 Faculty Excellence Awards celebrated the academic prowess and dedication of its educators. The ceremony, held on April 9 at the Glasscock Family Foundation Ballroom, provided a platform to honor faculty members who have made significant contributions both inside and outside the classroom.

The Distinguished Faculty Awards took center stage during the ceremony, recognizing faculty members for their exceptional work across three categories: research, service, and teaching. These awards recognize the commitment of faculty who have achieved recognition from their scholarly or creative peers. Notably, the event not only honored the recipients but also sought to affirm the vital roles educators play in shaping the minds that will define the future.

In a statement obtained by Cleveland State University's news page, CSU recognized Professor of Physics Jearl Walker as its Distinguished Professor. Walker, committed to the university for over half a century, expressed his intention to possibly "make it to the great-grandparents mark" before retiring, a testament to his unwavering dedication to education and the impact he has had on multiple generations of students.

"Teaching is tough because you rarely know in the classroom if you are making any lasting difference in a student's life. But I have now been here long enough that many former students have told me that I made a difference," Walker told Cleveland State University. Emphasizing his longevity and deep-rooted connections at CSU, Walker added, "In fact, starting many years ago, some students told me that their parents really enjoyed my class. And starting about 12 years ago, some students told me that their grandparents really enjoyed my class."

Other faculty members distinguished for their contributions were Bibo Li and Thijs Heus in Research; Joanna DeMarco, Aycan Grossman, and Vania De Paoli in Service; along with Deborah Espy, Sarah Rutherford, and Myrita Wilhite in Teaching. Their work, as recognized by these awards, keenly exhibits the breadth and depth of faculty commitment to not only disseminate knowledge but also to actively engage in creating and implementing solutions for the community they serve.

The Faculty Excellence Awards at Cleveland State, therefore, are not merely a formality but a genuine acknowledgment of the collective endeavor that defines a vibrant academic institution. CSU's commitment to honoring educators who invest themselves fully in their work reaffirms the essential value of dedicated faculty members in the educational sphere and, by extension, their crucial role in the betterment of society as a whole.
