The Cochise County Board of Supervisors has unanimously confirmed Melissa Avant as the county’s new Elections Director, an announcement made earlier this week. Avant succeeds the interim director Marisol Renteria and is set to helm the department tasked with orchestrating the county's electoral processes. Having carved out a career spanning over two decades, Avant is no stranger to the demands of public service and the burdens of leadership.
As reported by the county's official website, Avant's background is extensive, with roles in the Health Department, Finance, and the First Things First program. Her expertise in the fields of program implementation, strategic planning, fiscal oversight, and community engagement positions her as a seasoned figure within Cochise County's bureaucratic landscape. Boasting a Master's degree in Public Administration, and a Bachelor's in Business Administration, her educational credentials appear to bolster her practical experience.
In a public statement released by the county's official website, Avant acknowledged her new responsibilities, stating: “I am honored to again serve Cochise County in this new role," and added, "My professional experience, dedication to ethical leadership, and commitment to public service have prepared me well for the responsibility of ensuring fair, transparent, and secure elections.” Her commitment points toward a tenure potentially charged with the dedication for which she's known.
Board Chair Frank Antenori heaped praise on the appointee, stating, “Melissa Avant brings a proven track record of integrity, public service, and organizational leadership" and "We are confident in her ability to lead the Elections Department with professionalism and transparency,” as reported by the county's official website. Avant will tackle the immediate task of overseeing the county’s election operations following her onboarding process, which culminates with the Election Officer Certification Training in early June, from June 2 through June 6.
Looking ahead, Avant’s litmus test will be the special election primary on July 15, 2025, for Arizona's 7th Congressional District, a significant event for which her office is ultimately responsible. Furthermore, collaboration with Renteria extends to ensure a seamless transition and uphold the continuity of the department's functions during this pivotal period. Avant's official duties commence on May 27, marking the beginning of a pivotal chapter for Cochise County's election integrity.
