Starting today at 10 PM, final touches on the resurfaced stretch of College Avenue will begin, specifically lane painting. To limit the impact on traffic, the City of San Diego has chosen to do this essential maintenance work from 10 PM to 5 AM, daily through Thursday. But prepare to temporarily say goodbye to easy access from College Avenue to Interstate 8 because full closures are planned for both eastbound and westbound on- and off-ramps.
While the paint dries, those navigating the area should be ready to adapt their routes quickly; electronic signs are already up to guide drivers around the closures. The main thoroughfare of College Avenue, extending from Del Cerro Boulevard to the juncture of Canyon Crest Drive and East Campus Drive/Alvarado Road, is set to maintain one lane in each direction, avoiding fully interrupting the flow of northbound and southbound traffic during the project hours.
The work is a piece of a broader canvas, part of the AC Overlay 2202 Phase 2 (SS), a city-wide initiative to give various streets a much-needed facelift. As reported by Insidesandiego.org, the projects include replacing worn-out road surfaces with new asphalt, restriping lanes, and upgrading curb ramps for improved disability access. This also entails replacing damaged cross gutters, curbs, gutters, and sidewalks.
With over five lane miles of road getting spruced up, this $5.5 million investment is no small gesture towards city infrastructure. Of that, the segment on College Avenue represents more than two lane miles and swallows roughly $1.8 million from the total budget.
