The Colorado Aeronautical Board is spending big on airport infrastructure, approving $4.5 million in federal match and overmatch grant funding. These funds are part of the 2025 Colorado Discretionary Aviation Grant Program and will bring much-needed improvements to 29 public-use airports throughout the state.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, this financial move by the Colorado Aeronautical Board doesn't just stop at $4.5 million. When you add that figure to the $13.8 million in state and local grants approved earlier in January, it all totals up to $18.3 million in funding for 2025. This money will be working to draw nearly $90 million in federal funding, pimping out Colorado’s airports with everything from runway rehabilitations, terminal upgrades, to high-tech weather systems - all part of Colorado's grander scheme to strengthen its aviation system.
Digging into specifics, the whole package will support key projects like rejuvenating the runways and taxiways at several airports, including Colorado Springs and Grand Junction. Terminals at airports like Grand Junction and Durango will get a facelift, too. And let's not overlook the rural areas – automated weather observing systems are set to be installed at airstrips that might otherwise fly under the radar, like Canon City and Nucla. This spends the bucks where it counts on major expansions and reconstructions at places such as Eagle County and Buena Vista, ensuring that essential pavement maintenance doesn't get ignored in Limon and Trinidad.
David Ulane, director of the Colorado Division of Aeronautics, expressed the state's dedication to the aviation game, "This year’s investment reflects a continued commitment to enhancing aviation safety, efficiency, and capacity across Colorado’s diverse air transportation system," he narrated, as reported by the Colorado Department of Transportation. The plan behind this funding extravaganza is to maximize what state and local dollars can do by hooking them up with the generous federal match and overmatch grants.
