A domestic violence call in Columbus, Ohio, escalated into a deadly confrontation last night. The Columbus Division of Police reported that officers arrived at the 4400 block of Hampton Woods Court at approximately 9:41 p.m. after a caller reported potential domestic abuse and threats of lethal violence. According to a statement released by the Columbus Division of Police, the suspect began to open fire on officers from within the apartment, with a female victim also inside at that time.
SWAT teams and negotiators were quickly sent to the scene, arriving only to be met with gunfire from the male suspect. A sergeant established phone contact with the suspect, attempting over the course of an hour to peacefully resolve the tense standoff. Despite these efforts, the man continued to sporadically shoot at the SWAT officers. It was during this time that SWAT personnel made the decision to accurately return fire after the man opened the door brandishing a weapon and raising it in a threatening manner.
The aftermath of the incident saw the alleged female victim escape towards the officers for safety. She was later transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained prior to the police's arrival. The male involved in the shooting was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:55 p.m. His identity has not been disclosed, and notification of next of kin has been pending, as noted in the police document.
