In Cumberland County, the plight of a black husky mix named Zeus has culminated in a guilty plea for Amber Cheyann Bruce on charges of animal cruelty. WVLT reports that Zeus was found in January 2024, during an unrelated civil matter check by the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, living in conditions that were harshly described as "unsanitary and inhumane." The discovery triggered a welfare check, wherein deputies, in cooperation with animal control officials, heard disturbing noises that led to the unsettling find.

According to 3B Media News, Deputy S. Henderson and Deputy J. McCoy, responding to the distress calls, found Zeus in a state that could only be described as life-threatening. The dog was emaciated, unable to stand, with a body temperature of just 90.6 degrees - well below the canine norm. The situation within the residence also included a tan dog living in filth and a cat crated in feces, painting a broader picture of neglect.

Bruce eventually surrendered Zeus to authorities and was later charged after an investigation uncovered images from March 2024, showing Zeus in a healthy state, which contradicted her initial statement. As per the details provided by WBIR, Bruce was sentenced to 11 months and 29 days of supervised probation after entering a guilty plea on April 24, 2025.

Zeus, whose recovery was uncertain at first, has defied the odds through the dedication of shelter staff. "One of the worst cases of cruelty we have ever seen... and we weren’t sure he would survive the night," said the staff at the Cumberland Co. Animal Shelter, as noted by WVLT. Yet, the husky mix gained weight and strength over the three-month period following his rescue. Today, Zeus is in good health and tipping the scales at an impressive 40 pounds, ready for adoption and an opportunity at a compassionate home.
