Customs and Border Protection officers at Del Rio Port of Entry made a noteworthy discovery over the past weekend, seizing an arsenal that included 15 weapons and 24 magazines. These items were headed for Mexico, intercepted during routine outbound operations by vigilant CBP officers.
Working the frontlines, with the meticulous eye that's part of their job, officers at the Del Rio International Bridge selected a 2013 Ford E-350 van, which happened to be pulling a utility trailer, for a closer look last Sunday. According to a statement made by the CBP, advanced technology and a canine nose that's trained to sniff out the unusual were pivotal in alerting them to something hidden. After deploying a nonintrusive inspection system scan and a canine examination, a further physical check was conducted, and the stash of weapons and magazines was found concealed within ordinary commodities in the vehicle.
"Our frontline officers continue to do exceptional work as they maintain a strict vigilance," said Port Director Liliana Flores, praising her officers' combination of experience and relentless effort, which led to the significant weapons seizure, as reported by the CBP. The interception of such a stockpile of weapons immediately prompted a criminal investigation by Homeland Security Investigations special agents, as the contents were seized by CBP.
