Democratic Whip Katherine Clark announced a discharge petition for the Hands Off Medicaid and SNAP Act to counter Republican-led initiatives. She was joined by Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Representatives Frank Pallone, Brendan Boyle, and Angie Craig, according to the House of Democratic Whip.
During her remarks, Clark criticized the current state of affairs, pointing out the impact of recent policies. She said, “In just over 100 days, Trump has already spiked the cost of groceries,” and noted, "we have empty ports." She also warned, "And we’re weeks away from those empty ports turning into empty shelves and even higher prices,” as reported by the House of Democratic Whip.
The proposed act has created division along party lines, with Rep. Clark urging moderate Republicans to help protect important programs like Medicaid and SNAP. She said, "It only takes a handful of Republicans to stop this," calling for bipartisan support. Clark also pointed out concerns about cuts to services like healthcare, food programs, and Meals on Wheels, stating, “People do not want them to take away their basic needs — health care, food, school lunch programs, feeding our seniors, Meals on Wheels — in order to fund tax cuts.” This issue is expected to lead to a debate in Congress, as mentioned by the House of Democratic Whip.
