Last night a routine traffic stop escalated into a deputy-involved crash in South Brooksville, leaving a swath of darkness as power was knocked out in the area. According to a social media post by Hernando County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred near the intersection of S. Main Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard around 8:30 p.m.

The deputy, who was conducting proactive patrol, noticed a traffic infraction by another driver heading southward, the suspect attempted to flee at a high speed upon the deputy’s attempt to initiate a traffic stop. This resulted in the suspect's vehicle running a stop sign and colliding with the K-9 deputy's car. Both vehicles spun out with the deputy's vehicle coming to an abrupt stop against a power pole, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The collision caused minor injuries to the deputy, whereas the suspect was not injured. More importantly, the K-9 on board with the deputy, escaped unscathed from the ordeal. The suspect was taken into custody after a short foot chase following the crash.
