After almost 28 years on the run, a Detroit man has been apprehended and faces charges for assaulting two police officers back in 1997. Richard Davis, now 54, was detained and is being held accountable for an incident that has lingered unresolved for nearly three decades, as reported by CBS News Detroit.
Wayne County prosecutors outline the confrontation occurred during a late-night traffic stop on August 29, 1997. Davis, accused of carrying improper plates, allegedly engaged in a scuffle including biting the officers after a weapon was discovered in his vehicle. Despite being charged in September of that year, at which time Davis was 27 he was not in custody, which allowed him to evade capture until now. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office detailed the charges against Davis, including attempting to disarm a police officer and multiple counts of resisting arrest causing injury, in a social media post retrieved from their Facebook page.
Davis' resurfacing and subsequent arrest came about on Tuesday, May 13. The facts as they stand - relayed by ClickOnDetroit - indicate that he was set to be arraigned yesterday. Furthermore, during this time, Davis has apparently assumed various aliases including Raychard Carter, Andre Frederick Hardin, and a host of others, complicating the effort to bring him to justice.
Following his arraignment, Davis received a $100,000 bond. His legal journey is set to continue with a probable cause conference next Friday, followed by a preliminary examination on May 30, as stated by Wayne County authorities.
