Charges have been brought against Abdulnasar Muthana, a 23-year-old from Detroit, following an incident involving a 15-year-old girl at Lake St. Clair Metropark. According to The Detroit News, Muthana is facing a charge of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct by force or coercion, which carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison upon conviction.
The alleged assault took place on May 10, when Muthana reportedly began harassing the girl and two of her friends, all between 14 and 15 years of age. The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office said Muthana made sexual gestures toward the girls before he "allegedly approached the 15-year-old girl and touched her buttocks and allegedly forced his hand into her pants," as reported by ClickOnDetroit. The girl reportedly kicked Muthana in the groin and escaped.
Following the incident, Metropark Police and Macomb County Sheriff's deputies arrested Muthana. "I commend the bravery of the young victim and survivor of the confrontation," Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said, also praising the rapid response of law enforcement to apprehend "this offender," according to ClickOnDetroit. Muthana's bond was set at $50,000, with conditions barring him from having any contact with the victim, minors, or returning to Lake St. Clair Metropark or parks frequented by children should he post bond. The prohibitions also extend to possessing weapons or drugs.
The case against Muthana is set to continue on May 27, where he will face a probable cause conference. If convicted, the suspect would be listed on the sex offender registry.
