A tragic incident unfolded on I-94 near St. Clair Shores, where a Detroit man lost his life after being struck by two vehicles in swift succession. The victim, a 35-year-old Detroit resident, was hit around 9:30 p.m. Thursday following a single-vehicle crash that occurred on the westbound lanes of I-94 near 10 Mile Road. According to FOX 2 Detroit, the man had exited his vehicle, which had come to a stop on the left shoulder.

The situation took a turn for the worse when another motorist, reportedly losing control and going off the road, struck the man outside of his car. Michigan State Police indicated that after being hit initially, the man was pushed into the active traffic lanes, where a second vehicle hit him, as he lay on the left lane. The Michigan Department of Transportation alerted about the closure of all westbound lanes at 10 Mile Road following the incidents.

Emergency services transported the victim to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The first driver, a 30-year-old from Detroit, was taken into custody under suspicion of impaired driving, while the driver of the second vehicle who struck the man stopped and was released on the scene, according to Audacy. As part of the ongoing investigation, vehicle inspections, medical examiner reports, and blood test results are awaiting to shed further light on the tragedy.

Following the incident, Michigan State Police F/Lt. Mike Shaw stressed safety measures and the perils of impaired driving. "It is very dangerous to stand on the freeway," he said, also adding, "We are also reminding drivers to not get behind the wheel impaired. This crash was very preventable," in a statement obtained by CBS News Detroit. Reminding drivers of the hazards posed by leaving a vehicle on the freeway, especially after a crash, and the risks of driving while impaired resonate as hauntingly timely warnings in the wake of this preventable loss.
