A tense evening last night in Detroit ended with the apprehension of two carjacking suspects, thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Detroit Police Department (DPD) and Michigan State Police (MSP). The incident began around 3 p.m. when a gun was reportedly pointed at an elderly woman, leading to her being robbed and her vehicle being stolen. As detailed in CBS News Detroit's report, a "be on the lookout" bulletin was issued across the area.
An MSP K-9 unit subsequently canvassed neighborhoods near the scene and, at approximately 7:40 p.m., the stolen vehicle was located. An attempt to pull over the vehicle initiated a chase that endured for five minutes, culminating in a collision with a DPD vehicle at the intersection of Keeler and Freeland streets. Both suspects fled the vehicle on foot, as relayed by a post from the MSP Second District on social media. The female suspect was quickly apprehended while the male suspect attempted evasion before the K-9 detained him after refusing to adhere to verbal warnings.
F/Lt Mike Shaw of the Michigan State Police praised the collaboration in a statement: "This was a collaborative effort by DPD and MSP to take these dangerous suspects into custody," expressing relief that no one was harmed during the pursuit. Both the carjacking and subsequent chase are to result in charges, with DPD handling the armed robbery investigation and MSP submitting requests for fleeing and eluding charges to the prosecutor’s office.
