A 20-year-old District resident, Te’Vaughn Brown, has been indicted on felony assault charges after a violent, unprovoked attack on an elderly man at the Navy Yard Metro Station last summer. In a statement released by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia, it was announced that the indictment came through yesterday, with the Superior Court jury setting the stage for a trial date on July 14.
The incident, which occurred on August 9 at approximately 3:30 PM, involved Brown allegedly grabbing and subsequently assaulting a senior citizen who was attempting to pass by on the stairs of the metro station. The victim, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office, suffered serious injuries, including a fractured nasal bone and a broken tooth. This attack occurred just ahead of a Nationals game, adding a layer of concern for public safety on game days.
Beyond the felony charge, Brown is also facing misdemeanor charges in a separate case for simple assault and theft. His arraignment before Judge Jennifer Di Toro will determine his fate concerning the felony charge, which could carry an enhanced penalty due to the age of the victim, who was 65 years or older at the time of the offense.
The Metropolitan Police Department has led the investigation, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Ariel Lieberman is responsible for the case's prosecution.
