Over Memorial Day weekend, the El Paso Police Department spearheaded a significant enforcement operation with the Texas Department of Public Safety, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, and El Paso County Constables Precincts #1, #4, and #6, leading to a sweep of arrests and citations aimed at enhancing public safety. According to the El Paso Police Department, it was revealed that the concerted effort over the weekend was not only focused on reducing impaired driving incidents ahead of the summer season but also targeted drug offenses and outstanding warrants.
Surprisingly, no traffic-related fatalities occurred within this time, working this joint operation to work, sought to make the streets safer, which included saturation patrols and checkpoints geared toward intercepting those driving under the influence. A total of 42 arrests were made just for driving while intoxicated (DWI), with a disquieting variety of violations ranging from DWI with an open alcohol container (1), having a child under 15 in the vehicle (2), to those with blood alcohol content surpassing 0.15 (5), and even a felony DWI for a third offense or more (1).
When it came to drug-related apprehensions, the operation netted 9 arrests, which involved six instances of possession of a controlled substance and three for marijuana possession. While in the realm of warrants, 11 were arrested on felony warrants, and 8 others on Justice of the Peace warrants. Additionally recorded were 3 Class C arrests, including two minors in possession of tobacco and one minor consuming alcohol, and another arrest for criminal mischief.
With the summer season looming, nearly 200 citations were issued as part of this operation, which sought to broadcast an uncompromising stance against drug and alcohol-related offenses. A total of 3 DUIs involving minors were reported in the arrests, indicating a critical reminder of the ongoing challenges law enforcement face in deterrence of underage drinking, and the enduring work that lies ahead.
