The El Paso Police Department, with the support of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), is ramping up its enforcement against driving while intoxicated (DWI) violations. From May 22nd through May 27th, officers will be on the lookout for DWI incidents with increased vigilance as part of a targeted campaign funded by the TxDOT Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP). This initiative, which is a concentrated effort to curb traffic-related injuries and fatalities, is also emphasizing adherence to all traffic laws during this period.
With the STEP grant in hand, dedicated to reducing collision rates specifically by targeting DWI's, the El Paso Police urge the public to drink responsibly. According to the El Paso Police Department, an offense occurs under Sec. 49.04 when "a person is intoxicated while operating a motor vehicle in a public place". As families and friends gather and celebrate the approaching summer months, law enforcement officials hope that with this step, they will encourage a safer environment for all road-occupying citizens.
The efforts of the El Paso Police Department to deter and manage intoxicated driving come just ahead of one of the busiest holiday weekends of the year. Typically, the Memorial Day weekend sees a surge in travel and festivities, which, unfortunately, also sees a rise in DWI incidents. The STEP grant provides crucial resources that allow police to execute this enforcement surge, giving officers the means to perform their duties more effectively during these critical times.
