In the early morning silence that lay over the Bridge of the Americas international crossing, a 47-year-old man was apprehended with a dangerous cargo concealed within his own body. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the El Paso port made a major seizure on Monday, uncovering a dangerous exchange that could have had deadly consequences. According to the CBP press release, they intercepted 40 grams of powdered fentanyl and 57 grams of fentanyl pills hidden in three small packages within the suspect's rectum.

The incident unfolded when the U.S. man, attempting to cross into the United States as a pedestrian from Mexico, was stopped after a CBP drug-sniffing dog detected the presence of narcotics. In addition to the fentanyl, officers found a small quantity of methamphetamine in his travel bag. The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, was carrying not just powdered fentanyl but also methamphetamine. CBP El Paso Port Director Ray Provencio emphasized the danger, stating, “Fentanyl is a dangerous drug, and any exposure could be deadly but when it is in a powder form the danger increases exponentially,” as reported by the CBP official website.

After the canine alerted the officers, the suspect himself admitted to carrying drugs internally. Taken to a medical facility for a confirmation of his claim, it was found that he had indeed stashed away the narcotic bundles inside his body. The medical exam, a necessary yet likely uncomfortable process, confirmed the presence of multiple objects concealed internally. Ray Provencio detailed the risk involved, stating, "Not only is the smuggler at risk but so is anyone else in the vicinity if the packaging would be compromised and the powder became airborne," as mentioned in the same press release.

By 9:15 a.m., under medical supervision, the man passed the three bundles, which tested positive for fentanyl. Following these events, the suspect was returned to the port of entry, arrested, and handed over to Homeland Security Investigations special agents. He now faces federal charges associated with the thwarted smuggling endeavor.
