El Paso Community College (EPCC) is back in the spotlight with its TACHE chapter's first scholarship awards since 2014, evidencing a remarkable comeback from a skeletal membership during the pandemic to a thriving student organization. Three deserving students, Denise Dominguez, Jessica Ramirez, and Angie Jayleen Acuña, are now $200 closer to their academic goals, courtesy of EPCC's Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education (TACHE), which rallied local support through fundraising initiatives that have infused new life into the chapter.
Gilbert Silva, EPCC and Far West TACHE organization President, outlined the determined effort to revitalize the organization revealing in a statement, “One of the main goals of mine was to establish a culture, and fundraise for scholarships,” as per EPCC News. He emphasized the active presence EPCC's TACHE club has established in Texas with their community projects and service programs.
The awarded scholarships were determined by a distinguished panel including the Current State President, Dr. Eric Castillo, the President-Elect, Dr. Gareth Lujan, and Dr. Gabriela Sylvester, a Past State President of TACHE, as the organization sought to recognize and elevate the contributions of its student members. These accolades reflect not just a financial boost, but the collective ambition and dedication present within TACHE's community.
Oscar Velasquez, EPCC District Wide Counseling Coordinator and past president of TACHE, shared his excitement about the organization's growth, commenting, "TACHE is an organization that is open to all students and has grown tremendously as it has been in existence for over 50 years," as obtained by EPCC News, celebrating the progress while also acknowledging the strength gathered through its long history.
