On the afternoon of May 12th, tragedy struck Interstate 5 in Jackson County, where a fatal collision claimed the lives of two Washington residents. According to the Oregon State Police, the incident involved a northbound Ford F-150 driven by 69-year-old Michael Kevin Kasser of Issaquah, Washington, and a parked commercial motor vehicle.
The preliminary report suggests that Kasser's vehicle unexpectedly veered off its lane and collided with the trailer of the parked Volvo, which was occupied by 62-year-old Mohamed A. Baioumy of Moreno Valley, California. The impact was severe enough to cause instant fatalities to both Michael Kevin Kasser and his passenger, 68-year-old Linda Elaine Kasser, also from Issaquah. Baioumy, the Volvo occupant, was unharmed in the crash.
Emergency response teams, including the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, Cal-Fire, Ashland Fire and Rescue, and ODOT, swiftly arrived at the scene to manage the situation and conduct the necessary investigations. The crash caused significant disruption, with traffic flow on the interstate affected for approximately one hour while authorities performed their on-scene activities.
As the local community grapples with this sudden loss, questions linger concerning the sequence of events that led up to the fatal incident. While official investigations are still in progress, no additional details have been forthcoming regarding potential causes or contributing factors that led to Kasser's vehicle leaving its designated travel lane. The accident serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictable nature of road travel and the inherent risks present even during the most routine of journeys.
