A tragic incident occurred on Heckscher Drive yesterday afternoon when a head-on collision between two SUVs claimed the life of a 34-year-old man and left a 57-year-old man seriously injured, as stated by Florida Highway Patrol.
The Action News Jax report indicates that the accident happened shortly before 3:30 P.M. on Batten Island, close to Mayport. The younger driver, who was headed eastbound, lost control and veered onto the right shoulder, then dramatically overcorrected, swerved into the westbound lane, and directly into the path of the other vehicle.
According to a detailed account by News4Jax, the 34-year-old was ejected from his vehicle upon impact since he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time. His injuries were fatal and he died on the scene.
Action News Jax confirmed that the other driver, the 57-year-old man from Jacksonville, incurred serious injuries during the crash. Florida Highway Patrol has described the unfortunate event as an "offset head-on collision."
