A high-speed chase on Interstate 70 in Sevier County led to a fatal crash on Tuesday. A suspected speeder, clocked by a trooper at over 90 mph and later at speeds surpassing 140 mph, fled from law enforcement before being spiked and ultimately crashing, according to the Utah Department of Public Safety.
The pursuit began near milepost 30 when the Trooper, patrolling eastbound, noticed a vehicle approaching rapidly from behind. Attempting to intercept, the Trooper activated emergency lights, signaling the vehicle to stop. Defying the call to halt, the suspect increased their speed, prompting a high-velocity pursuit with other troopers joining in, positioning to deploy spike strips near milepost 40, the East Richfield Exit.
The spikes effectively punctured the driver's side tires of the fleeing vehicle, but the driver continued to barrel eastward. Roughly three miles later, the vehicle's debilitated left front tire began to disintegrate. Further ahead, another local officer stood ready near milepost 43, spikes at the ready to attempt a second halting maneuver.
As reported by the Utah Department of Public Safety, the suspect careened off the road in an evasion attempt, turning over multiple times and resulting in the ejection of the driver. The aftermath was grave, the 63-year-old male driver sustained fatal injuries during the ejection. The Sevier County Sheriff’s Office is presently overseeing the crash investigation, piecing together the circumstances that led to this tragic end.
